Seventy Years In The Making: Cheetahs vs Brummies

In last weeks notes I told you all about how the Chargers meeting against the Bullets had been the most competitive match of the season. After last week, I don’t think that’s true.

The somewhat temperamental Sandy Lane shale is starting to cooperate, and we were served another fantastic meeting against the Redcar Bears. There was passing aplenty, and a spirited fightback from the Bears to take it to a last heat decider, when it looked like the Cheetahs had the match in the bag early on. My personal highlight was heat seven, when Cheetah-for-the-night Chris Harris stalked Erik Riss for three laps until the yellow and black flag was shown, at which point he turned right, wound the throttle on, and rode round the outside of Riss to victory. Bomber is certainly box office, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to hope that on July 13 he gets stuck in traffic on the way here and the Bandits have to make do without him…

For those of you here last week you might have noticed that we’re now able to offer an additional prize in the Raceday Jackpot draw. From now on each week, one lucky winner and guests will be able to watch heats 14 and 15 from the centre green in the company of stadium manager David Lestrade. So now there’s even more reason to dig deep and join in – you might win £100, or you might win a prize money can’t buy! As for the proceeds from the Raceday Jackpot, we’ve reached an agreement with Jamie about how best to support the riders, and we’re hoping to be able to do the first presentation on the 1st of June when the Chargers take on the Plymouth Centurions in the NDL, so if you want to see your money being invested back into the team, come along in two weeks time. Also, don’t forget to flag down Mark Dean to pick up your copy of the second edition of the new Cheetahs Chronicle. The first edition sold out in only a few weeks, so make sure you get yours before they sell out too.

The Speedway GP series is now well underway, and will roll into the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on the 13th of August. Throughout the club’s wilderness years we at the Supporters Club have continued to organise a coach to Cardiff, and this year will be no different. So if you’ve got your tickets, but you’re worried about the cost of getting to Wales, why not come with us and save yourself the hassle. We’ll be taking names and deposits in the bar, so if you want to come with us, come and get your name down.

On to this week, for what Rob Peasley assures me will only be the second ever league meeting between the Cheetahs and the Brummies. The irony of that being, of course, the third ever meeting between the Cheetahs and the Brummies will take place tomorrow night in Perry Barr. Let’s hope that we beat them more times in 24 hours than we have done in the previous seventy years.

Go Cheetahs
